What Should i do PGDM or MBA ? this is the most common question among MBA aspirants from last many years

So let’s find out the answer and what is the actual difference and pros cons of PGDM or MBA.

PGDM: PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the main problem starts when we hear the word “diploma” in the name. Many students think they will be awarded an diploma, to an extent they are right. all autonomous institutions ( not affiliated to any University) who are offering post graduate courses such institutes can not offer MBA degree since affiliation to any University ( Indian or Foreign) is must to offer an MBA.Even premier institutions like IIMs and XLRI’s offer PGDM,PGPM, PGP etc since they all are independent and autonomous bodies.

The main reason for institutions to go autonomous is to design the curriculum accordingly and more relevant to industry needs and more job oriented and does not have to follow the outdated syllabus used by the Universities ( Not in case of Deemed or Private Universities such as Amity University or Christ University ).

What to check : Always make sure the PGDM program is approved by AICTE ( All India Council for Technical Education) and equivalence certificate of AIU ( Association of Indian Universities) in case if you are planning for Government jobs or further studying for doctorate programs.

Pros : More practical less theoretical, more job oriented program.

Cons: Expensive  than MBA

Here is the list of some Colleges offering PGDM

Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad

XLRI Jamshedpur

IFIM – Bangalore

Asian Business School – Noida

MBA: MBA stands for Masters of Business Administration only Universities can grant MBA degree ( Indian or Foreign University). Any deemed or private University ( e.g Amity University , Lovely Professional University)  can offer MBA degree or any institution affiliated to state universities for example Galgotia School of Business – Greater Noida offers MBA program affiliated to AKTU formerly UPTU.

Pros : Affordable program since the fee is regularized by the state University.

Cons: Not updated as per the industry needs, less job oriented

Verdict : By the information shared above you must have got an idea about which one to choose or which one is better it all depends upon your requirements, if you are someone looking for a PG degree for further studies or Govt. exam preparations then  you should opt for an MBA program. But if you are someone looking for a corporate job or industry exposure then PGDM would be better.

We hope this article has helped you in choosing the better program for yourself.

  • sir.. can we pursue a government job after doing PGDM. because few colleges i have contacted are saying it is accepted and equivalent to PG Digree

    • Yes, you can easily pursue for government jobs but make sure your program is AICTE approved and for some jobs AIU certification is required.

  • My bother is doing MBA form GNIOT greater noida and i am thinking of taking admission in Amity Global Business school. What is the difference between these two digrees.

    • Both the Colleges offer MBA programs while MBA of GNIOT is affiliated to AKTU -Lucknow and Amity Global Business School offers MBA degree from Amity University- Noida. Both universities are UGC approved hence it makes no difference the only difference is that AKTU is government university and Amity on other hand is a private university. Both the degrees has equal valuation so don’t worry.
